How Disney Attracted Teens to Watch Disney Channel Episodes

The American television channel Disney Channel has produced numerous hit shows that attracted thousands of viewers to watch Disney channel episodes. The network airs original series from animated cartoon series which stars Mickey Mouse and his friends to live-action series which stars popular teen stars like Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez.

The first Disney episode to air is Good Morning, Mickey!, which sported Disney classical animated shorts including Silly Symphonies and Mickey Adventures. During its first year, Disney has attracted 532,000 US subscribers to watch various Disney Channel episodes. The rating soon led to the acquisition of some shows from the network’s sister company Buena Vista Television and other local and foreign distributors such as The Raccoons and Five Mile Creek. Other earlier shows include Welcome to Pooh Corner and You and Me Kid.

Originally, Disney shows were aimed for children viewers (with cartoon shows such as Sabrina: The Animated Series, Goof Troop, and Duck Tales) but then the onset of live-action shows and ramped up sitcoms has also captured teenagers to watch the different Disney Channel episodes. After the air of The Mickey Mouse Club, in the early 2000s Disney showcased Lizzie McGuire starring singer-actress Hilary Duff and Even Stevens starring Shia LaBeouf. As an added feature to encourage teenagers to watch episodes, the network also featured music videos from singers and artists in Disney’s house record labels called Walt Disney Records and Hollywood Records. With that, Disney Channel was able to reach 70 million of cable and satellite subscribers in 2001.

The success of attracting teenagers to watch episodes on Disney Channel led to the production of teen flicks in 2003 (like Cadet Kelly and the musical The Cheetah Girls) and more live-action shows and American sitcoms (such as That’s so raven, Cory in the House and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody). More shows then spawned to coax the interest of the teen audience and Disney then created other successful musicals such as High School Musical, Hannah Montana, and Camp Rock.

After the musicals have lost its appeal to the viewers, Disney decided to produce fantasy and supernatural sitcoms in the 2009 to stimulate a new group of audience. Disney then aired the Disney original movie Princess Protection Program starring Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez. Selena Gomez then starred in the hit series Wizards of Waverly Place and its movie counterpart Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie which became Disney’s highest-rated program on cable in 2009, attracting at least 11.4 million viewers and becoming the second highest-rated movie premiered in Disney Channel. After that, Disney produced a special series titled Wizards on deck with Hannah Montana, a crossover of Wizards of Waverly Place, Suite Life on Deck, and Hannah Montana.

Disney presently airs series live-action series such as Good Luck Charlie, Jessie, Gravity falls and Austin & Ally. But aside from the live-action shows dedicated to attract teenage audience, Disney still continuous to air animated shows aimed to let children watch such episodes on Disney Channel. The success of cartoons such as Good Morning, Mickey!, Totally Spies, Kim Possible, The Proud Family, Recess, Kick Butowski: Suburban daredevil, and Lilo & Stitch Movie and Series, Disney currently airs the hit cartoon Phineas and Ferb.
